A Fortress
Through the Ages
Just a short drive from Brielle House, the Rock of Dunamase rises dramatically above the plains of County Laois, offering visitors a captivating blend of history, legend, and panoramic vistas. This ancient fortress, perched atop a limestone outcrop, has stood sentinel over the surrounding landscape for over a millennium.
Known in Irish as Dún Másc, the Rock of Dunamase boasts a rich tapestry of history. Its earliest recorded mention dates back to 845 AD, when it was attacked by Viking raiders. In the 12th century, the site gained prominence when Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster, included it in the dowry of his daughter Aoife upon her marriage to the Norman lord Strongbow. This union marked a significant chapter in Ireland’s medieval history, intertwining Gaelic and Norman lineages .
Over the centuries, the fortress changed hands among various noble families, including the Marshals and the Mortimers. Despite suffering damage during the Cromwellian conquest in the 17th century, the ruins that remain today continue to echo the site’s storied past.
