The Rock of
Dunamase

Explore a Window into Ireland’s Storied Past, Less than a 30 minute drive from your accommodation at Brielle House.

A Fortress
Through the Ages

Just a short drive from Brielle House, the Rock of Dunamase rises dramatically above the plains of County Laois, offering visitors a captivating blend of history, legend, and panoramic vistas. This ancient fortress, perched atop a limestone outcrop, has stood sentinel over the surrounding landscape for over a millennium.

Known in Irish as Dún Másc, the Rock of Dunamase boasts a rich tapestry of history. Its earliest recorded mention dates back to 845 AD, when it was attacked by Viking raiders. In the 12th century, the site gained prominence when Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster, included it in the dowry of his daughter Aoife upon her marriage to the Norman lord Strongbow. This union marked a significant chapter in Ireland’s medieval history, intertwining Gaelic and Norman lineages .

Over the centuries, the fortress changed hands among various noble families, including the Marshals and the Mortimers. Despite suffering damage during the Cromwellian conquest in the 17th century, the ruins that remain today continue to echo the site’s storied past.

Our captain, Pearse, is an amazing storyteller and knows so much about the area; it’s history, wildlife, and people. He took us on a wonderful ride from Athlone to Wineport Lodge and we couldn’t have asked for a better time!

We had an incredible experience with Pearse on his River Shannon boat tour. He kindly accommodated our family of six at the last minute when our plans changed, meeting us promptly even in wild weather. The boat was very comfortable, and Pearse was a knowledgeable and engaging guide, sharing fascinating stories and insights about the region's history and landscape.

This was one of the 1st things I booked when planning our Ireland trip. It was wonderful. Pearse is so very knowledgeable and his love of Ireland, the water and history/culture just shines through. So friendly and welcoming - this was a perfect day for all!

Conor F

Very informative day out on the boat with Pearse who is a natural story teller. His knowledge of the lakelands, Athlone and Clonmacnoise was second to none. Myself and 3 others set off with Pearse from Athlone and we made our way down to the amazing Clonmacnoise. Pearse taught us the history of Athlone and some of the beautiful wildlife on the river south to Clonmacnoise. I'd highly recommend this tour!

Trevor P

Pearse is an absolute gentleman. Turned up 15 minutes beforehand, ensured everyone was comfortable on a slightly bumpy ride and was very informative about the area and the lakes. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending his services.
